I Am More

   By Shae W.

I am a grain of sand on the beach, a drop of water in the ocean.

I am unnoticed by the world.

am strong, for my shoulders hold the weighted responsibility of my family.

I am just a girl whose ebony skin reflects the sun during sweltering afternoons.

I am someone who  thrives  on  curiosity by consuming the knowledge stored in any precious literature.

I am a scrawny girl because of the merciless weeks without food, leaving only the skin on my bones.

I am  weary after the countless  hours in the night  that I am restless because of my pleading stomach.

I am a girl who wishes on the stars  outside  each night, foolishly hoping for clean water and a big princess castle to call home.

I am resilient for I walk to town each day with only a never-ending  dirt  path  road to guide me.

I am longing for the sweet taste of fruit that has been stolen  from the trees around me.

I am a panther in the night, fighting alone to survive.

I am just a girl whose aspirations soar high only to fall back down to Earth.

am able to  imagine  the  thriving,  vivid flowers  even though the land for miles is arid.

am unable  to truly  see the world that lies beyond these African plains.

I am a young girl who aspires to be a writer.

I am a girl with a dream and the day will come when I reach  it
