While ecotourism may seem to be good there are people that believe it does more harm to a country. Many case studies have been done. The generation of solid waste, habitat destruction, and culture commodification have all been linked to ecotourism.

While there are negatives from ecotourism there are many positives. There are incentives called PES (payments for environmental services) which are offered to people who maintain and conserve the environment. With the PES and other environmental laws deforestation in Costa Rica has decreased.
