Publications in the JCL

By Irene Calderon

Creating

Publications - every editor has a unique way of creating a publication, here are some steps I found useful!

Publications are a great way to keep everyone in the Junior Classical League connected and informed about events. They serve as useful publicity tools and develop graphic design skills and collaboration.

Content and Format - every publication is a balance between content and format.

- Make sure the page is balanced, readable, and effective in conveying the focal point.

- Enhance with interactive elements, images, art, and graphics.

- Plan your reading direction and the amount of white/colored space and optimize use of fonts.

- Use columns and paragraph b r e a k s to make the text less intimidating to read.

- Include content that is relevant to the community and appriopriate to the audience. You should include current events that JCLers deem important.

- Ensure diversity of content to make the issue interesting

Use sidebars, pulled quotes, and bylines if applicable, and captions for pictures

Consider your theme (convention results, spring/winter issue, etc.) and brainstorm.

Plan how many pages you will create with an outline.

Solicit articles, photos, and art according to your theme and outline.

Check the articles for accuracy and objectivity.

Edit the articles! Correct for grammar, punctuation, and spelling mistakes.

Lay out the articles. Make sure the layout is organized and cute.

Include interactive content, multimedia, external links etc. as a last step.
