Boat of Garten was laid out by James Braid , in 1898 . Thirty miles south-east of Inverness , it has long been regarded as one of Scotland ’ s prettiest courses , which is no surprise when you see the Cairngorms rising above avenues of trees . You will not be taxed in terms of length ( 5,900 yards , back tees ) and your driver could easily be left in the car , but Boat of Garten demands accuracy to find tight and cleverly shaped fairways between the silver birch and pine trees , the heather and the broom . Every hole is enchanting and the terrain throws in considerable undulation to increase both the beauty and drama of the course . Holes drive up and downhill , approaches can be to tilting greens well above you and always you are chaperoned by the landscapes beauty . Great value , too and keep an eye out for steam trains .
