DESTINATIONGOLF . TRAVEL SOUTHWEST
Did You Know ?
A par 69 means nothing when you have eight par fours over 400 yards … and three over 450 yards . Combine that with two 200 + yard par threes and this is a serious test of your golfing abilities .

Southerness

For a par of 69 , with five par threes and two par fives , this might read like a short course but it is a links with teeth . At 6,566 yards ( white tees ) Southerness will test the best . This links dates back to the 1940s and it is set out on low , mostly level terrain that suggests subtlety and strategy … but with its ever-present gorse and / or heather and subtle doglegs it throws in a touch of savagery too . In return , fairways give you room . Expect the traditional links challenges of wind , swales , humps and hollows , as well as some sneaky pot bunkering . It all combines to create a highly rated course that lies a little off the beaten track but one that ’ s worth making the journey to play . Views are endless – the mountains in the Lake District are clearly visible as is the Isle of Man – and you get very cosy with the Solway Firth on several holes , starting on the 8th . Here the dunes ensure big links traits and the par four 12th , also beside the water , is the signature hole . Greens are small and beautifully defended . The middle tees are more manageable at 6,110 yards .
