1st Gen Gains Representation at UNE COM

Together, they have founded UNE COM’s First-Generation Student Group to create a supportive space for students to share their unique experiences, raise awareness for the least studied minority in medicine, and advocate for resources essential to their success.

The 1980 Higher Education Act defines a first-generation college student as either an individual both of whose parents/guardians did not complete a baccalaureate degree OR in the case of any individual who regularly resided with and received support from only one parent/guardian, an individual whose only such parent did not complete a baccalaureate degree.

The group aims to raise awareness about the unique needs of first-generation students by advocating for continued research and stronger mentorship programs.

November 19, 2024:

The group held its first event, creating a welcoming space where students could share their lived experiences over coffee and pastries. The gathering offered a platform for first generation students and friends to connect, exchange stories, and reflect on their journeys to medical school. Stories highlighted themes of resilience, resourcefulness, and overcoming adversity, highlighting both the challenges and strengths inherent to the first-generation identity.

April 23, 2025: First-Generation Q&A Panel with first generation clinical faculty and students at UNE COM. This event provided powerful insight into the first-generation college student experience throughout medical school, residency, and beyond. The group hopes to hold this event annually to continue this knowledge exchange and grow the UNE COM first generation student network.

Hutchinson and Muench hope to inspire institutional changes that better recognize and address the needs of this vital but underrepresented group in medicine. Their efforts underscore the importance of diversity in medical education and align with broader goals of fostering inclusivity and equity in healthcare.  This initiative marks an important step toward empowering first-generation medical students at UNE COM and beyond.

UNE COM currently has an estimated 172 students who qualify as 1st Gen.
