that are derived from them, and then I took from this etymology textbook the fun activities and games for practicing these. With the grant application I had created a budget spreadsheet of all the different side activities we'd be doing, the materials, in order to get the money, to show how specifically it would be spent. And the last thing I had to do was to get instructors and a host school. For the instructors I spke with Carolyn Herman, who was the president of SJA, and she thought it was great idea and she said she'd spread the word and get some instructors; and I did the same thing at my school, and then, in early July, I'd started reaching out to middle schools int he area: McKinley, Sherwood, Westdale. I didn't get any response 'cause it was summer. But then later in the month I get a call and I was bale to schedule a meeting with the principal, I attended the meeting, and the principal was not there but I did meet with some staff members and they liked it. and then I called back about it later and I spoke with the assistant principal, Mr. Pizzo, who really liked it was well so he spread the word about it among the faculty and teachers to see who would sponsor it , and he found Ms. Moreau. She generously offered to sponsor it, and then I got teachers at SJA and Baton Rouge High to technically sign off as sponsors just in case to have adults who could be accountable for the student instructors as adult contacts. The whole idea of it was to show lessons to students who are interested in the class itself and are appreciative of the influence it has.
Q: Angelina, how has yoru presidency been so far this year, what have you done in the program, and what are some goals you have for this year?
Angelina: It's been pretty good so far, it seemed very daunting at first, but when I actually went and taught I had a lot of fun, and it was really nice to be able to interact with the kids and to actually see what the program was all about because I hadn't instructed the year before, I had only helped with the budget and planning and stuff like that. Goals, I think, are to just organize it a little bit more. We have a lot of instrucotrs, but we don't really get a lot of responses, and it's usually a bit rushed in terms of whose doing what. I don't think I've done anything revolutionary or memorable so far, but I've been getting used to it, having fun, seeing the people, putting faces to names, and that's been good so far.
Q: What is your favorite activity that you've done so far with the program or thing that you've taught with the program?
Angelina: I honestly just like the teaching of the actual roots, it's really fun, you put up the root on the board and they get excited and start shouting out words that they think apply. Sometimes they're right and sometimes they're horrible wrong, and it's - I've just really liked that, I've really liked seeing their excitement and just being able to engage them, so that's my favorite part.
