There are 811 education leaders in the OECS spanning across early childhood, primary, secondary, TVET and national colleges in seven[1] Member States. Additionally, there are 172 education deputy leaders in the OECS primary, secondary and national colleges.
The total number of teachers in the OECS at all education levels is 10,993; of which 20 percent are males and 80 percent females. The data shows that initially, that there is a remarkable gap between the number of male and female teachersand secondly a continuted attrition amongst male teachers over the years.
Figure 2.5 Figure 2.6
Figures 2.5 and 2.6 show the disaggregation of Leaders by Sex & Member State at both Primary and Secondary levels. In all the Member States there are more female leaders than male at both primary and secondary levels with the exception of St. VIncent and the Grenadines (SVG) where there are more male leaders at the secondary level. The data variation between male and female are much larger at the primary level and there are more male leaders at the secondary level.
In this chapter, there is also a focus on leaders, deputy leaders and teachers engaged in continuous professional development to monitor currency in the field. Also attention is given to tracking heads, deputies and teachers with at least an undergraduate degree in educational leadership, administration or management by education level and sex.
