The dusty and full of cobwebs basement was pitch dark and they couldn't see anything at all, but fortunately, Mark had a small flashlight in his pocket that he used to carry around. He turned it on and saw Jim still unconscious and tightly tied with a thick rope to the cell bars. Mark did his best trying to untie his unhappy friend but he suddenly heard someone coming down to the basement. He quickly laid down and pretended to be deep asleep.
While The Old Man was walking slowly down, he heard someone moving around, so he turned on the lights swiftly and saw both of the boys out senseless. The old villain was confident that the boys were making noise, so he silently picked up an old broom and tried poking them to make sure they weren’t awake. Jim was still unconscious and Mark was still acting that he was dazed. After he realized that the friends were not awake, he left. While the Old Man was trying to provoke the boys, he accidentally dropped the keys from his pocket into the cells. When Mark stopped acting and got up he saw the keys lying on the ground. Sadly, they were too far to reach but if Jim were awake, he could surely help reach it.
Mark came closer to Jim’s cell’s side and whispered.
"Wake up Jim!"
