She took us to the top of the tree where we were able to look down at the forest. Everything looked so small, and I instantly felt more at home than in my actual house. The other treetops swayed in the soft breeze, I shivered, too. It’s like Felix noticed the goosebumps forming on my skin because he climbed into my lap and snuggled against my tummy.

I began petting Felix. “How did you find this place?” I asked the blonde girl who sat next to me. Linda tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, before turning to me.

“I was adventurous when I was younger. I was lost on my way home and had the bright idea of climbing into the tree to find my way back.” The same strand of hair untucked itself from behind her ear and got stuck to her lips again. I laughed for the first time since moving here. Linda laughed, too. Felix purred appreciatively, pushing his head against my hand—asking me for more head scratches.

“Did you?” I questioned. “Find your way home, I mean.”

Linda nodded. “I did. Felix helped me. That’s when I met him and took him back home with me.”

“That’s where Lucy lives right now,” Felix mumbled.
