Topwater Time
( Continued from page 12 .) visibility is limited .”
Besides noise , topwaters come in a variety of colors . My favorite color combinations are bone / chrome , pink / silver , and black / chartreuse . On sunny days with clear skies , bright colors with plenty of chrome or silver produce the best results . When cloudy , and overcast conditions prevail , darker color patterns like black or olive green are better options .
Over the past year , or so , my go-to topwater bait has become the Unfair Lures DawgWalker . The plug has an exceptional walk-the-dog action and a loud , deep rattle . Two unique characteristics of the DawgWalker that set it apart from other floating fakes are its fins and bleeding gills .
The fins on this streamlined lure help give it a tight , side-to-side motion that keeps it in the strike zone . The bleeding gills further increase the attractiveness of this bait to the fish , as the small red filaments flutter in the water . The lure also sports a heavy duty barrel swivel as the main line attachment . This eliminates the need for a loop knot , allowing anglers to tie a traditional blood knot or fishing knot straight to the swivel .
The DawgWalker can be chunked long distances and comes in a variety of colors . I ’ ve had the most success throwing the “ HoloPink ” and “ Gold-n- Orange ” color patterns . To purchase the DawgWalker visit www . unfairlures . com .
Another relatively new bait on the market that is drawing plenty of explosive hits is the StutterStep manufactured by Bill Lewis , the producer of the well known Rat-L-Trap . This plug features a pivot point on its belly allowing it to be twitched side-to-side while barely moving forward . This keeps the lure in the strike zone and above the fish much longer .
When it is being walked along the surface and then allowed to pause , the StutterStep ’ s pivot point lets the bait spin around , nearly 180 degrees . This is a key trait of the lure , especially when a fish is following it but won ’ t strike . When the bait spins completely around on the pause , it ’ s as if the bait fish is now staring the predatory fish straight in the eye , challenging it . This often forces a finicky fish that is following the lure to react and strike .
The StutterStep also has a wide paddle-shaped tail that creates a ton of vibration when it is worked aggressively . The plug can also be walked across the surface on a steady retrieve , making it easy for anglers of all skill levels to work
