OLD GUILDFORDIANS
“I am delighted that GGS
has taken the initiative
to implement Refugee
Scholarships and therefore
provide more underprivileged
children with an opportunity
to earn an invaluable
education”
the School Community wishes to applaud
and encourage. This was a special memory
because it was the icing on the cake for me
in being recognised for my hard work and
dedication to the outstanding education I
received at Guildford Grammar School. I was
overjoyed because it meant that my family
were happy with what I achieved and the
people who helped me to get into the School
had something to be proud of. It was also
a way to thank the good people at GGS for
everything they did for me and to let them
know that it was all worth it.
Life after
Guildford Grammar School
In 2003 I was again fortunate enough to
attend Notre Dame University Australia
through the kind and generous monetary
scholarship that was provided to me. I studied
a Bachelor of Information and Communication
Technology and a Bachelor of Science. In 2006
I was offered the opportunity to undertake
Honours as part of my Bachelor of Science
degree. I am one to never let an opportunity
go by, so I did my Honours thesis in 2007.
In that same year, I graduated with the two
degrees and First Class Honours.
During my university years I went to
Bangladesh for the first time in nearly 10 years
to visit my family. What an exhilarating and
emotional roller coaster ride that was! While
at university I also met my beautiful wife-tobe, who I also took to Bangladesh and we
even had a traditional Bangladeshi wedding.
Work wise, my journey has led me to help
protect the environment as an employee of
the Department of Environment Regulation.
My role is Senior Policy Officer.
Just recently we had our first child. What a
life changing event this was ... and still is! It
has given us many sleepless nights and many
more to look forward to. Nevertheless, my
wife and I have never experienced love, care
and devotion like this before. We are loving
life right now and I can’t think of anything
more satisfying and rewarding than watching
our little baby grow.
My reflections
I wouldn’t be where I am now if I didn’t work
hard and made the most of the opportunities
given to me. The financial support provided
by the School enabled me to map out a
better future. The kindness and generosity
shown by Guildford Grammar School and
what that means to me cannot be expressed
in words, but I am eternally grateful. It was
fundamental in equipping me for a better
future and one where I am also able to help
my family.
If I could give any advice to current students,
it would be to always try and do your best
with every opportunity you have and in
everything you do – and try to enjoy it as
well. Respect yourself and respect others
regardless of race, gender, background and
skin colour.
To all the Year 12s I would say, try not to
stress, worry, lose sleep, have anxiety and
be under pressure because of the fear of
failing an exam or not getting the TER score
you want. Take time to study and prepare
yourself to do your best, no one can ask
you for more than that. If at first you don’t
achieve your goal, remember that there
is more than one way to get to where
you want to go – it may not be your first
preference, but sometimes what works out is
usually better anyway.
GGS is helping underprivileged
children
I felt honoured to be asked to write this
article to talk about my experiences.
Those who are underprivileged only need
an opportunity Ѽ
