He said , “ We were going to make the run across the Sacramento River , but there were 4-foot rollers out there . We went the back way through the San Joaquin and found largemouth bass on the ima Pinjack crankbait in red / black or chartreuse / brown around the rocks or tules . We also graphed a number of striped bass , and I brought home a limit of perfect fish taco linesides in the 6-pound range . We had an outgoing tide throughout the day , and the stripers were stacked up off of the shelves in the deep cuts in 10 to 25 feet of water , waiting for the bait to come over the top of the shelf . We scored with the Optima Bubba Shad swimbait in white with a chartreuse tail on a ½-ounce jig head along with 2.5-ounce P-Line Laser Minnow spoons .”

Late Summer Trouters Prosper At Twin Lakes

BRIDGEPORT - “ Twin Lakes are still kicking out a bunch of fish , including lots of 4 to 6 pound rainbows as well as a whopping 16 lb 6.5 oz brown from Upper Twin ,” exclaimed Jim Reid of Ken ’ s Sporting Goods in Bridgeport . “ It ’ s a bit unusual to see that size of fish this time of the year but you just never know .”

“ The big one was caught trolling , but most of the action has been fly fishing deep with streamers and bait fishing with Mice Tails , pinched crawlers , PowerBait and crawlers . Sometimes in the heat of the summer the lakes in the area can be kind of tough but there seems to be some pretty active fish at the Twins this summer ,” said Reid .

“ Bridgeport Reservoir has still been hanging in there for the boat bait anglers , as well as a limited amount of trolling success . We haven ’ t talked to any fly anglers lately but there should still be some stillwater nymphing action up in the channels or off of Rainbow Point . Most of the trolling action has been in the Rainbow Point to Paradise Shores area while the bait anglers are still doing well off of Rainbow Point , up in the Buckeye Bay area channels and some in the East Walker channel . “ The Virginias are , as usual , still hanging in there . Lots of nice fish being caught on all three lakes . Fly anglers are using small streamers like twin lakes specials , wooly buggers and leech patterns with soft hackle , zug bug and pheasant tail droppers . They ’ ve also been picking up some fish on top with beetle and ant patterns . Bait anglers are doing well with pinched crawlers , PowerBait and Mice Tails . Lure anglers are doing well , mostly early and late in the day , with Kastmasters , Thomas Buoyants and Panther Martins ,” Reid concluded .

YUBA CITY – Fishing for fall Chinook salmon is bouncing up and down on the Feather River below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet .

“ We ’ ve had some good days and some bad days ,” said Robert Reimers of Rustic Rob ’ s Guide Service . “ But overall the bite has been fantastic , at least compared to last year . We ’ ve caught 1 to 3 fish per trip , with only one trip not producing any salmon .”

On one trip , Robert Palma of Collins Lake , Reimers and the deckhand landed their limits of chinooks by 7:30 a . m . Those fish weighed 14 , 15 and 18 pounds .

“ We ’ ve been using Brad ’ s Killerfish # 1 in the dragonfly pattern for the best success ,” noted Reimers . “ On most days , we ’ ve been off the water with one fish limits for 1 to 2 anglers by 9 a . m .”

Another angling option is to target resident stripers on the Feather below Shanghai Rapids and Boyds Pump . Your top prospect is to throw swimbaits and top water lures early and late in the day for fish measuring 18 to 24 inches long , along with an occasional larger striper .

Throw Topwater Lures Early and Late for Bass

SACRAMENTO – If you want to catch spotted , smallmouth and largemouth bass at Folsom Lake , try throwing top water lures such as Zara Spooks and Pop-Rs early and late in the day .

“ There ’ s a good top water bite available for boaters fishing early and late in the day ,” said Alan Fong at Fisherman ’ s Warehouse . “ Target the main body and river arms for the three species of bass .”

During the day , anglers should fish with Robo Worms and other plastics off rockpiles and humps at 25 feet deep and deeper .

3619 has slowed down in the dog days of August . “ The guys who know what they ’ re doing are picking up some rainbows and king salmon while trolling Speedy Shiners at 45 to 65 feet deep ,” said Fong .

There are some huge rainbows on tap in the lake ; a customer recently showed Fong a cell phone photo of a 14 lb . rainbow that he reported catching at Folsom .

“ Trollers are picking up some rainbows while trolling Speedy Shiners behind flashers at Folsom ,” confirmed Tim Boggs of Elkhorn Outdoor Sports in Rio Linda .

Folsom Lake is holding 568,698 acre feet of water , 58 percent of capacity and 86 percent of average . The lake is 424.86 feet in elevation .

KLAMATH RIVER

Trollers Battle Estuary Kings

KLAMATH GLEN – If you want to catch a bright , hard-fighting spring chinook or early fall run salmon , the Klamath River Estuary is a great place to target .

“ The salmon fishing is fair to good ,” said Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motor Sports Guide Service . “ We landed a 14 lb . spring Chinook while trolling a Kastmaster in the estuary for a little while yesterday and today we lost one salmon and caught and released a 5 lb . steelhead while fishing upriver .”

The water temperature in the lower river has cooled down to 71 degrees with a big release of Trinity River water down the Klamath by the Bureau of Reclamation . “ It was 73 degrees a couple of weeks ago ,” said Lampkin .

Anglers fishing in the estuary are trolling with anchovies , spinners and Kastmasters , as well as casting Kastmasters .

The season for fall-run Chinook salmon began on Aug . 15 and will continue through Dec . 31 . The possession limit is six salmon , no more than three over 22 inches .
