Reclamation Cuts Nimbus Dam Releases to 800 cfs

– On August 22 , the Bureau of Reclamation decreased water releases to the American River below Nimbus Dam from 900 cfs to 800 cfs to “ conserve storage ,” according to T . Washburn , Reclamation

spokesperson . Fishing pressure remains very light on the lower American River . KIene ’ s Fly Shop reported that “ most of the action is on fishing for steelhead smolts and occasional half-pounder in the riffles ( casting a caddis dry pattern at dusk or at sun up will be productive ). You can also fish for largemouth and smallmouth bass in the back waters .” For striped bass , fish the deep holes on the river from Sailor Bar to Howe Avenue with top water baits and swimbaits early in the morning and just before dark . Fly fishermen will find the top action while swinging Clouser Minnows # 1 in white and turquoise / olive , turquoise / gray and turquoise , and yellow and turquoise . Salmon fishing continues to be very tough on the American and Sacramento rivers in the Sacramento metropolitan area . Many anglers are heading of town to fish saltwater , including halibut and stripers in San Francisco Bay or salmon and rockfish on the ocean . Catfish , either in Northern California lakes or the Sacramento River , are your best local prospect at this time . Anglers can also head out in the early morning and evening hours to catch channel catfish in the Sutter and Yolo Bypass and a myriad of Delta sloughs . Fishing is best at night with chicken livers , sardines , anchovies and prepared baits or live minnows . The CDFW ’ s Fishing in the City program also stocks local ponds with channel catfish ( April - October ) and rainbow trout ( November - March ). No fishing clinics are scheduled at this time .
