ConnectEd Summer 2015 | Page 3

On a mission to save their campus energy and time, members of Lakeview Centennial High School’s Watt Patrol perform random energy checks throughout the school day, leaving tickets if active electronics or running lights are observed in vacant classrooms. Efforts like that at multiple schools across the district have helped GISD save $2.16 million in energy costs since September 2013. Breakfast 3 and lunch prices to increase Elementary and secondary students will see an increase in school breakfast and lunch prices this year. All breakfasts now cost $1.50, a difference of 20 cents, due to increased cost of an additional fruit/vegetable menu offering. Lunches will increase to $2.70, a difference of 5 cents, due to regulations from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Additionally, high schools will offer premium lunches for $3.50. Increases affect only those who pay full price for meals. Students who receive free or reduced-price benefits will not see a difference, and may take advantage of both types of lunches at high school cafeterias. Farewell to Education GISD Last month marked the final farewell for Education GISD, a newsletter that chronicled the accomplishments of Garland ISD students and staff through pictures and stories for more than 30 years. This month, the district introduces ConnectEd, a revamped publication with the same purpose. It boasts a sleeker design and a more easy-to-read format. New features such as top 10s, photo collages, alumni spotlights and reader’s voices will also become reoccurring staples.
